Dubuque Community Foundation establishes Haiti Relief Fund program

The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque has established a Haiti Relief Fund to address the long-term needs of victims of the January 12 earthquake.

The Telegraph Herald will partner with the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque in the effort.

While other agencies are addressing immediate emergency needs, this fund is intended to address ongoing needs for long-term recovery, cleanup and support.

“We want donors to have a high level of confidence that their philanthropic dollars will go to the people and organizations most impacted,” said Nancy Van Milligen, foundation president and chief executive officer. She emphasized that the Community Foundation fund is not intended to compete or interfere with the agencies providing the first wave of emergency assistance. “The people of Haiti will need help long after immediate needs are addressed,” she said. “This fund will take the long-term view.”

Added Jim Normandin, Telegraph Herald publisher, “At times like this, in the face of extreme tragedy in another country, people want to help – but they might hesitate because of uncertainty that their donations to get to the right agencies. We have utmost confidence that the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque will be excellent stewards of tri-staters’ donations.”

As a member of the Council on Foundations, the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque has access to experts to provide counsel concerning the immediate needs in Haiti, the organizations responding to the tragedy, and the long-term assistance.
