CFGD Announces Great Give Day on Tuesday, May 6

Community Foundation hosts 24-hour, online fundraising event for more than 50 Northeast Iowa nonprofits

The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque (CFGD) is hosting Great Give Day, Northeast Iowa’s first online giving day, on Tuesday, May 6. The 24-hour online fundraising day is an opportunity to celebrate and support local nonprofits while helping them to attract new donors and build online fundraising capabilities for long-term success. More than 50 nonprofits are participating in the event, which is open to nonprofits with endowment funds at CFGD.

To give, visit www.GreatGiveDay.org on Tuesday, May 6 and make a donation of $10 or more to your favorite nonprofits anytime between midnight and 11:59 p.m. Your gift will go further thanks to local sponsors who are generously funding prize hours for nonprofits; grand prizes will also be awarded to nonprofits that raise the most dollars or receive the most donations. (The prize schedule is available at www.GreatGiveDay.org.) Organizations will also earn a percentage of national matching funds from Give Local America, a national partnership celebrating the 100th anniversary of community foundations.

All Great Give Day donations must be made online by debit or credit card at www.GreatGiveDay.org. The website’s leaderboard will reflect all donations in real-time so donors can track the total amount raised as well as the progress of their favorite organizations.

Great Give Day is an opportunity for everyone in our community to be a philanthropist. “A lot of people think you have to be wealthy to give back, but even the smallest donation can make a big difference,” said Kari McCann, CFGD director of nonprofit and philanthropic partnerships.

Dr. Liang Chee Wee, president of Northeast Iowa Community College, will be participating in Great Give Day both as a nonprofit leader and as a donor. “My mom survived the occupation during WWII, and sharing with others was important to her,” he said. “Throughout her life, even when she had little, she would share as much as she could. I support the Great Give Day in honor of my mom’s teaching to never let an opportunity to share with gladness pass me by.”

Online community giving days have been growing in popularity throughout the country since 2009, with some events in larger cities raising as much as $14.4 million for nonprofits in a single day. In total, giving days have generated more than $100 million for charity, attracted thousands of new donors, and increased nonprofits’ ability to interact and fundraise online.

Great Give Day is sponsored by: Theisen’s Home*Farm*Auto; TH Media; Radio Dubuque; Dupaco Community Credit Union; Honkamp Krueger & Co., P.C.; Premier Bank; Dubuque Bank & Trust; and Klauer Manufacturing.
