The charitable partnership between Old Chicago and The Foundation for Dubuque Public Schools was formed prior to the Grand Opening of the Old Chicago Dubuque which officially opened for business on Monday, May 28, 2018. Through pre-opening events, a donation of $1 for each Chicago 7 pizza sold and 10% of each online to-go sale using the Foundation promo code for the first month of business, the Dubuque Old Chicago will present a check to The Foundation for Dubuque Public Schools for $15,848. The check wias presented to representatives from the Foundation for Dubuque Public Schools at 6 PM on Tuesday, August 28th. Representatives from the Dubuque School District and Foundation were present prior to the check presentation to say a few words about the cause.
The Foundation for Dubuque Public Schools supports student achievement through general, endowed and designated funds for various educational programs in the district. The Foundation for Dubuque Public Schools has earmarked The Old Chicago donation specifically to the Alternative Learning Center (ALC) Tiny House project. The Tiny House project will create alternative pathways to success for students enrolled in career technical education classes. Through the project students will investigate house design and residential construction, emphasizing sustainable development. The 160 square foot Tiny House design will have green technologies such as solar energy and grey water recycling. Local experts will mentor the construction classes through design and material selection.
The Tiny House will act as a catalyst for developing and maintaining a program that offers in-depth experiences into construction related trades. The Tiny House will be community sponsored through in-kind educational volunteerism and financial support. Upon completion, the house will be featured at various school functions and community events. The Tiny House will eventually be sold, in hopes the sale will be a self-funding catalyst for future building opportunities for students at the ALC.
