"Why I Give": Heather Hamm of Rainbo Oil

Heather Hamm is an administrative assistant and Community Corner liaison for Rainbo Oil, parent company of three Dairy Queens, two Fazoli’s restaurants, and several Kwik Stops in Dubuque.  Heather’s responsibilities include everything from renewing food service licenses to serving ice cream cones on “DQ Free Cone Day”.  She also assists with community events such as Relay for Life, the Heart Walk, Halloween Harvest, Kwik Kare, Magical Kwik Stop Christmas, and FDPS' Dine Out for Public Schools.

With five participating restaurants throughout the city, Dairy Queen and Fazoli’s restaurants gave 10% of their November 9th sales to FDPS in support of grants for school programs and projects.  The next “Dine Out” date will be on May 31st, 2018 – a perfect day for some ice cream!

Q. Why do you feel it’s important to support Dubuque’s public schools?

At Dairy Queen we are able to start hiring employees as young as 14 years old. Many of these teammates have just started high school at either Hempstead or Senior, and they still have at least four vital years of education ahead of them. Whether our student employees are making blizzards at Dairy Queen or serving breadsticks at Fazoli’s, we feel that the real world coaching we provide is complimentary to their academic coursework.  Together, we are helping Dubuque’s youth become responsible, hard-working young adults.

At Kwik Stop, Dairy Queen, and Fazoli’s, we also know that the success we have as a company is thanks to our community’s patronage.  There is no better way to say “thank you” than to give back to local students, teachers, and families.  The foundation’s “Dine Out for Public Schools” event is a perfect way for us to show our gratitude.

Q. What impact do you hope to have through your gifts to FDPS?

We hope that our involvement in “Dine Out for Public Schools” brings a sense of pride to employees that work at Dairy Queen and Fazoli’s, while raising money for school district programs and projects. During those busy “Dine Out” shifts, our high school teammates know 10% of the day’s sales will help bring new technology to classrooms, or a special event to their school. We are happy to partner with an organization that is dedicated to enriching school curriculum and giving students new ways to learn.
