Our History

The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque started in 1999 as an idea shared by a group of community leaders. Armed with a P.O. box and a dream to provide people in the region an opportunity to support their community, the Community Foundation was incorporated in October 2001 and went public a year later.

Today, we work tirelessly to find innovative means for community members to improve the lives of their neighbors and address Greater Dubuque’s most pressing needs. Whether forging partnerships to establish a mobile brain health crisis program or bringing together community members to find big-picture solutions to the region’s child care shortage, we know no limits when it comes to transformational change.

These impacts are not possible without the dedication and ever-expanding network of the Community Foundation’s supporters. No matter the situation, Greater Dubuque’s people have proven time and time again that being part of this community means helping neighbors and making our home a better place for all.

"Before the organization of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, we had no vehicle for those of our citizens who wished to, and were able to, provide funds for the general well-being of the tri-state area and its people."
— John O’Connor, Founding Chair
