The Northeast Iowa School of Music (NISOM) is a non-profit community organization located in Dubuque, Iowa that makes music education and enrichment accessible to all.
Northeast Iowa School of Music offers private lessons, group classes, four adult performance ensembles, community concerts, free youth programs in downtown Dubuque, and more. We frequently partner with other organizations to provide programming, including lessons for college credit in partnership with area schools. Our largest program is weekly instruction through private lessons, which are available in piano, voice, guitar, composition, and band and orchestra instruments. No audition or experience is required, and scholarship assistance is available. Our 20 faculty members collectively have over 300 years of teaching experience. Other current programs include Dubuque Community String Orchestra, New Horizons Band, Lollipops & Music for Our Preschoolers, free guitar classes at the Dubuque Dream Center, and ChamberFestDBQ, which is led by Northeast Iowa School of Music alumnus Michael Gilbertson, who was a 2018 Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Music.
Organized and incorporated in February 2001, Northeast Iowa School of Music began offering classes and lessons in August of that year. In 2005, our school was certified by the National Guild for Community Arts Education through a comprehensive evaluation. More recently, the Dubuque community recognized our impact in two notable ways. In 2016, our school was honored through a mayoral proclamation, and in 2017, we won an Impact Award from Dubuque365 for making a significant and lasting impact on the community.
