In the fall of 2004 a number of recovering addicts saw a need in the Dubuque community for an organization which would provide access to resources for individuals and their families suffering from the illness of addiction. After finding a suitable rental location and electing a Board of Directors , The SOURCE opened its doors in May 2005. Soon it became apparent, by the large number of suffering addicts walking through the front door for comfort and help, that The SOURCE was fulfilling a need in our community. In October 2006 we received our 501c3 tax-exempt status allowing for support from the community at large. The illness of addiction is nondiscriminatory and as research shows 1 in 10 people will suffer with this disease, left untreated, many will end up in jails or institutions. The SOURCE has served hundreds of people of all ages (16 to 70) and from all walks of life. Suffering addicts and their families from the City of Dubuque and many surrounding communities in the Tri-State Area have received help at The SOURCE. Currently, we are the only organization in Dubuque supporting addicts and their families which is run on a day to day basis by recovering addicts and with no paid staff. We provide a safe, alcohol and drug free location in which to hold 12-Step Recovery Meetings as well as social and educational events. We work in conjunction with local treatment facilities (The Substance Abuse Service Center, Turning Point, and The Wellness Center) in a cooperative effort to provide resources and support for those seeking recovery.
