Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque awards $37,585 to local nonprofits through Community Impact Grants Program

The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque recently announced 10 nonprofit recipients of 2019 Community Impact Grants totaling $37,585.32. Now in its 15th year, the Community Impact Grant program is funded by gifts to the Foundation’s Community Impact Fund.

Community foundations are charitable organizations that use philanthropy to address complex social challenges, benefitting their communities and improving the lives of people in their geographic region. The goal of the Community Impact Grant program is to improve policies and practices affecting the Greater Dubuque community and to have the greatest possible impact. Unlike many grant programs, Community Impact Grants focus on building capacity of local nonprofits by supporting training and development, collaboration and coaching, research and planning, and operations.

The Community Impact Grant program was established in 2004 and is made possible by donations from community members to the Foundation’s Community Impact Fund. Annual payouts from this endowment fund have supported a total of $492,195 in grants to nonprofits across the Community Foundation’s eight-county service region. This is one of several grant programs that, combined with payouts from endowment funds established by donors and nonprofits at the Community Foundation, has distributed over $40 million to nonprofits since the Foundation’s inception in 2002, including grants to 2,447 nonprofits last year alone.

“Donations to funds like Community Impact Fund and the Dubuque Forever Fund build a sustainable source of income to address the most pressing current and future needs,” says Nancy Van Milligen, Community Foundation president and CEO. “Thanks to the power of endowments and the kindness of our community members, funds like these enable us to tackle the challenges of today and create a better tomorrow.”
