10 Simple Ways to Make a Difference for Others This Summer

by Jon Aguilar, CFGD Communications Assistant

As graduation season comes to a close and we look forward to new beginnings, we are reminded that summer is just around the corner. Whether you have sights on planting a garden, attending a family reunion, or enjoying summer festivals, there are many simple ways you and your family and friends can make a difference in your community this summer.

1. Start a Neighborhood Garden

While organizing a neighborhood garden is no small task, this venture can bring neighbors together, strengthen new friendships, and foster local stewardship.

2. Volunteer

There is no shortage of ways to get involved. Volunteer at a local food pantry, adopt-a-highway, or foster animals from an area shelter.

3. Read

Reading strengthens young minds and helps them succeed later in life.  Volunteer to read at your local library. If you have children, make it a family experience and ask them to help.

4. Coach a Team

Support your local youth by offering to coach a team. It's a great opportunity to share your skills and serve as a quality role model for area kids.

5. Become a Mentor

Many kids just need someone to look up to. Explore opportunities to become a mentor in your community.

6. Buy Fresh and Local

My family always looks forward to summer farmers' markets. They're a great way to support local farmers and boost the local economy.

7. Visit a Retirement Home or Hospital

Bring flowers to someone who hasn't had any visitors. Offer to play an instrument or share a talent. Or just simply offer your time to talk to someone who needs a friend.

8. Buy a Cup of Coffee

Buy a gift card at your favorite coffee place and have a barista give it to someone who seems like they're having a bad day.

9. Go for a Walk

Pledge to walk or bike to work for a week and donate the savings to a cause you love. Invite your coworkers and friends to join you. It'll strengthen your heart in more ways than one.

10. Donate to a Cause You Care About
