Be part of the conversation about our children’s future
Join the Community Foundation and local experts to discuss challenges in education.
The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque will bring together a panel of local experts on Thursday, Sept. 16 for a free, virtual event called Community Conversations: Setting Students Up for Success. The event is one in a new series of discussions to shed light on the challenges our community faces and the work being done to find solutions.
The Sept. 16 event features Abigail Degenhardt, Director of Dubuque County Early Childhood; Shirley Horstman, Executive Director of Student Services for the Dubuque Community School District; and Cynthia Wehrenberg, Youth Impact Coordinator at the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque. Participants will learn more about:
• Addressing the summer slide in our community
• Effects of COVID on reading levels and how we can help kids catch up
• Overcoming the transportation barrier
• How chronic absenteeism affects learning
“Helping our community's children succeed is a concern for all of us, and it's some of our most important work,” says the Community Foundation’s vice president of development and communications, Bobbi Earles, who will moderate the panel discussion.
The Foundation has a long history of partnering with local organizations to remove barriers to success for youth in the Dubuque community. Addressing these challenges takes a holistic approach and a passion for nurturing new generations. “The Foundation’s Every Child Reads initiative drives early literacy success and builds a foundation for long-term academic achievement,” says Wehrenberg. The Foundation’s Dubuque College Access Network changes the lives of students who never imagined going to college, and Vision to Learn brings free eye exams and glasses to children.
Facing adversity requires all community members to think and act like parents: love, commit and advocate – that’s the approach the Foundation takes to helping children through challenging times today and long into the future.
