Countdown to Year-End Giving
by Melanie Bressler, CNP

While we munch on leftover Halloween candy, carve our turkeys and stand in line for Black Friday listening to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” for the one hundredth time, we are reminded of the many causes that address the needs in our communities.
Regardless of why you give, here are a few things to remember if year-end giving is a part of your holiday plans:
- Treasure isn’t the only gift you can give.
Consider a donation of time or talent. Adopt a family for the holidays, volunteer at a local food pantry, or foster a furry companion.
- Are they a 501(C)3?
While there are many worthy causes, only donations to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations are tax-deductible. If you give through the Community Foundation, we will document the status of all nonprofits prior to making a gift on your behalf and can help you identify organizations that are qualified to receive your gift.
- There are many ways to contribute
You don’t have to write out a check. The Community Foundation can help you give in other ways including securities, real estate, or life insurance.
- Give early and complete your gift by December 31
If you are seeking tax deductions, make your donation before December 31. Gifts of stock and real estate are complex and take more time to process, so plan accordingly.
- Let the Community Foundation do the legwork
Working with a philanthropic advisor at the Community Foundation gives you access to our extensive knowledge of the local nonprofit community and the broad charitable needs of our region—so you can stay informed about the organizations you support and the effect your giving will have on the future of our community.
